A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck at 6:19 AM on Thursday, May 22, 2025 in the sea area 56 km northeast of Neapoli, Lasithi, at a depth of 60 km, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

The tremor lasted quite a while, and many residents received alerts from 112 with instructions on what to do during an earthquake.

No damage has been reported, according to the relevant authorities, and seismologists are reassuring the public.

They believe this was the main shock, and no strong aftershocks are expected.

Still, it's worth noting that anyone planning an excursion—especially a hike through a gorge—should proceed with caution, as there may be unseen risks in the terrain.
